Premenstrual syndrome, more commonly known as PMS, is the name given to the symptoms some women suffer in the days and weeks leading up to the period. They can include cramping, mood swings, bloating, skin problems, and even depression. While they may seem as inevitable as your period, there are a few things you can do to decrease your discomfort.

  1. Try medication. Talk to your doctor to see if your symptoms are severe enough for a prescription. Birth control can help lessen most of the discomfort that can accompany PMS.  However, it must be taken on a daily basis. You can also try anti-depressants. These are especially useful if you suffer from depression, anxiety, or mood swings around the time of your period.
  2. Change your lifestyle. Even though it may seem counterintuitive, exercising while experiencing cramps can decrease your pain. Also, avoiding excessive amounts of salt and eating a lot of veggies can help to avoid bloating. Maintaining a healthy, active life can help you decrease any symptoms of PMS.
  3. Go for the old-fashioned method. When all else fails, you can always take some ibuprofen, use a hot pad, and curl up on the couch. There isn’t anything your favorite movie and a pint of ice cream can’t cure.

No matter how you choose to treat your PMS, don’t let it control your life every month. Explore your options and find something that works for you.
