4 Questions to Ask When Choosing and OB-GYN

It is natural to have a lot of questions for your doctor, especially when searching for a new OB-GYN. It’s important for you to find a doctor that is good at what he or she does, but is also a good fit for you and your needs. Here are some questions that you may want to ask as you interview possible physicians.

A good first question to ask is how long a potential doctor has been practicing. A doctor that has been in practice a long time will likely have experienced much more than a recent graduate.

Second, you should ask if the prospective doctor will personally attend all of your visits and delivery. Some obstetricians have their own practices and make a real personal effort to attend every appointment and birth with their patients. Other doctors are part of a group that rotates shifts. You may see a different doctor at each visit depending on who is on call.

Third inquire if the obstetrician has a limit on the number of clients he or she is seeing based on due dates. If a doctor has taken on too many patients that are due the same month, he or she may not be able to make it to every delivery.

Lastly, be sure to ask which hospitals your prospective physician has contracts with. You may find a physician you like, but your insurance won’t cover the hospital or the hospital is one you do not prefer.
