At What Age Should My Teenage Daughter Visit a Gynecologist?

Uncategorized

Many parents wonder at what age they should schedule their teenage daughter's first visit to a gynecologist. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that young girls should start seeing a gynecologist when they are between the ages of 13 and 15. Here are some of the reasons why regular appointments are important.

Supplying Development Information

Unless there is a medical condition that requires immediate attention, generally, girls will not receive a pelvic exam or pap smear during a first visit. The initial appointment is more a meet-and-greet affair. Your daughter will get a chance to meet her gynecologist, and the doctor uses this opportunity to collect and supply information.

Preparing for a First Examination

A first examination will be less scary for your daughter after she was able to develop a relationship with her doctor. There will be no need to feel embarrassed or shy when sharing information. Gynecologists usually explain the procedure in detail. Knowing what to expect alleviates anxiety.

Answering Questions

Curiosity often arises when girls reach that critical juncture between adolescence and adulthood. They often have questions about the development of their body and physical relationships with boys, yet cannot discuss these matters with their parents. However, gynecologists can address these issues in confidence. The shared knowledge can help the specialist determine if girls are active and additional tests need to be performed. Your daughter may learn how to prevent a pregnancy and avoid contracting certain diseases.
