Your Different Birth Control Options

Preventing unplanned pregnancies is easier than ever before due to an abundance of options, but choosing from those options can feel overwhelming. Depending on your individual needs, you can choose a birth control method that works for you. Read on to learn about some of the more popular options.

The Pill
One of the most common methods of birth control, the pill comes in many varieties. Progestin-only pills, combination pills, extended-cycle pills, and more offer hormonal pregnancy prevention.

Condoms are a popular option, since they protect against unwanted pregnancy as well as STI’s. If you and your partner have not been recently tested, condoms are the smartest way to go. They can also be used in conjunction with other forms of birth control for added protection. Check the materials before use, particularly if you have a known latex allergy.

IUDs, or intrauterine devices, come in copper and hormonal varieties. IUDs are surgically implanted and can be left in place for years at a time. IUDs are one of the most effective methods of reversible birth control, since you don’t have to remember to take a pill or use a device.

A small rod (about the size of a match) can be surgically placed under the skin of your upper arm and left for up to 3 years, where it releases pregnancy-preventing hormones.

Vaginal rings are usually placed in the vaginal canal for 3 weeks then removed for a week so you can have a normal period.
